What science says about neurostimulation and period pain
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) electrotherapy is a natural, non-invasive process used to relieve all types of pain, acute or chronic, by means of electrical impulses. In the case of period pain, for example, menstrual TENS uses low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate the nerve cells, which blocks the transmission of pain signals. These electrical impulses are generated by a battery-powered electrical stimulation device and transmitted to the nerves via electrodes placed on the skin. This leads to a considerable reduction or even disappearance of the pain, allowing you to carry on with your activities with peace of mind.
Dysmenorrhoea, a painful problem for women
According to a 2023 Inserm study of 21,287 women aged 18 to 49, more than 90% of them experience period pain with an intensity greater than 1 on a scale of 10, 10 being the maximum pain. Among them, 40% suffer from moderate to severe dysmenorrhoea, meaning that they feel pain greater than 4.
So many women suffer from mild period pain as well as dysmenorrhoea. Sometimes the discomfort is so intense that many of them turn to medication, with its potential side effects. Dysmenorrhoea is caused by contractions of the uterus. When it is intense, it can be felt as far as the legs or back.
Dysmenorrhoea may be a common phenomenon, but it is no less disabling. During their periods, women may suffer from abdominal cramps, spasms, stomach pain and even headaches. This situation considerably disrupts their daily lives, affecting work, family life and social activities.
Relieving period pain without medication
TENS can be an effective way to relieve period pain naturally without resorting to medication. Simply place the electrodes on the painful area, in this case the lower abdomen. Once switched on, the device, which works via Bluetooth, sends gentle electrical impulses to the nerves via the electrodes. Relief occurs during the session and continues afterwards. However, its duration varies from one person to another.
Another advantage of this technique is that the brain releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkilling hormone, which helps relieve pain.
However, it is important to remember that electrostimulation does not tackle the root of the problem. The cause of the pain is therefore not eliminated. On the other hand, many women report that they feel immediate relief using this method.
Electrostimulation devices are available commercially, with or without a medical prescription. They are calibrated so that you can use them safely at home, in accordance with the instructions provided.
How to use a Bluetens device to relieve painful periods?
Bluetens electrostimulation devices are designed to help relieve several types of pain naturally, but also to support athletes in their performance. A Bluetens device consists of a unit and electrodes that you can control via a dedicated app. To relieve your period pain:
Choose a comfortable position, lying down or semi-seated,
Place the electrodes on your lower abdomen, as shown in the photo in the app
Choose a “Period pain” programme and switch on the device.
Relief generally lasts around 4 to 6 hours, a duration equivalent to the effect of paracetamol.
About the electrostimulation programme for period pain
The Bluetens “Period pain” programme offers three different options to suit everyone. They have the advantage of combining two types of stimulation to relieve pain immediately and over time. Each programme gives you the necessary guidance on the intensity to use.
As for the duration of use, refer to the chosen programme, but you can keep the electrodes on for as long as you need relief. The selected programme can be repeated up to five times a day. Menstrual TENS sessions are discreet and can be carried out anywhere, at any time.
Has the effectiveness of electrostimulation been proven?
Between 2008 and 2010, numerous studies were carried out in Germany to test the effectiveness of electrostimulation. Research conducted at the heart clinic in Bad Oeynhausen and at the University of Cologne all scientifically proved the effectiveness of neurostimulation for period pain.
In a study conducted by the University of Bayreuth, 85% of the subjects tested saw an improvement in their symptoms. In another study conducted by a working group of the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de Santé), neurostimulation for period pain was shown to considerably reduce chronic and period pain.
According to these experts and other specialists in period pain research, treating recurring pain with electrostimulation is therefore extremely beneficial. It can even help reduce or eliminate the use of medication in order to limit side effects and promote recovery.
Can electrostimulation also help with endometriosis?
Electrostimulation is also an ideal solution for all women who suffer from endometriosis. The impulses can relieve this chronic pelvic pain and improve blood circulation. This naturally reduces inflammation in the abdominal area, while relieving pain and general discomfort. Do not hesitate to consult your doctor to find the treatment option that suits you best.
The Bluetens range of pain relief programmes, including the period pain programme, helps combat pain related to periods and endometriosis. In this section, you will find 3 different programmes suitable for all women. Other pain relief programmes are available, around fifteen in total, allowing you to vary the effects and find the most effective programme for each woman. They combine two types of stimulation to relieve pain: one that provides immediate relief by blocking the pain message sent to the brain from the painful area, and one that provides longer-term relief by releasing endorphins.
It’s easy to use. Simply place the electrodes on your lower abdomen or other painful areas, such as the lower back, and let Bluetens do the rest! Each programme provides guidance on intensity and frequency of use. Our devices are used in pain clinics and hospitals and are CE certified (medical device).
TENS, an ally against chronic period pain and endometriosis
If you want to avoid or limit the use of medication to combat regular period pain or even endometriosis, TENS should be your ally. Electrostimulation is a safe, painless and at the same time very effective way to relieve or even end your suffering.
Discover the Bluetens devices, the Bluetens Classic 2 and the DUO Sport 2. They have settings designed to relieve period pain and help you regain a better quality of life. With clear instructions, they are easy to use to relieve period pain, reduce inflammation and promote blood circulation, among other benefits.
